Maybe TV is simply gaining the status and variety of book's standard fair. After all, books do engage people over the course of days. Reading books like Da Vinci Code and Harry Potter shows that people are enjoying books where clues and red herrings are scattered across the pages.

If you play video games, you'd probably realize that some video games are also engaging players to figure out what to do and where to go for info, for getting treasure chests, side-quests, etc.

In other worse, the intellectualism may be simply another trend of the continual rebellion against the corporate mass culture. If you can't make THE book that can appeal to everyone at one time, why would a TV show be able to do that same thing? Was there ever the show that has timeless appeal? The movie that everyone regards well?
