Craig's List Mentioned on Time

When Craigslist.org gets mentioned on TIME.com, the biggest news magazine in the United States; that's when I perked up my ears and vindicate The Bay Area is Talking for covering the San Francisco-based website devoted to classifieds and other postings because of how craigslist was involved in helping people find Katrina victims.

The Mission and History section explains that Craig saw how a community on the WELL (Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link)—which I did a lame research for a paper on online community—and on Usenet.

He decided in 1995 to set up Craig's List to let people know about cool events in San Francisco. Eventually, it spread to include all the major networked cities in the world, which you can see on the right side of the screen, in tiny prints.

As for me, I haven't found much use for it, but I'm happy other people find it useful: It's different from EBay (also set up in the San Francisco Bay Area, apparently) in that it's free to advertise and trade; for example, my step-dad sold my old and broken standard-shift Toyota car on Craig's List for someone else to adopt and take care of: Unfortunately, after selling it to some Hispanic-looking guys, we received a notice that it was to be towed away because it was abandoned on a freeway entrance. We sold it because the window was stolen, and the alternator (something that's supposed to shunt power from the engine to the battery) didn't work.

I don't know how to use Craig's List, though; but I will say that it's remarkable that Craig's List hasn't changed much in terms of style. It's spartan and spare; it hides a wealth of information behind a wealth of choices.
