Milan Conference in 1880
Milan Conference in 1880 was a significant and pivotal moment in the education of the deaf in western civilization.
I've created a wikipedia article in commemoration for an event that nearly destroyed sign language, but for the United States, where Gallaudet College (now Gallaudet University) and some high schools in institutes for the deaf remained a bastion for the preservation and usage of manual communication. It also spurred the creation of the National Association of the Deaf, an organization that exists to this day and continues to fight for sign language.
