Food Faddism
A particularly insidious part of food faddism is that of accusing carbohydrates of making us fat, leading to see bread -- the main diet of western civilizations for thousands of years -- to be the culprit of obesity. However, the human brain (two percent of your body weight) consumes 18 percent of the energy we eat every day, all of which must be from carbohydrate. So, your attempt to drink diet soda is only depriving your brain of energy that it needs.
There is one source of energy that the brain can consume as a "last resort." That is ketone body generated from fat. The brain itself cannot take in fat, so the liver must metabolize fat into ketone bodies, which are then taken into the brain for energy. The Atkins diet propose that we induce in our body a state of "ketosis" arising from elimination of carbohydrates in the food we eat, so no bread and no sugar. What's the brain to do against itself?
