uncivil, unequal brawl

I remember now what I wanted to say in this blog. It was regarding the Deaf protest now happening on Gallaudet. I have to say that I didn't feel the need to blog on it because I'm not as well connected as these people already blogging. Sure, May was a time when we needed as many people aware of what was happening as possible. Now, autumn has come, and for the past three or four weeks the situation at Gallaudet has escalated, with the administration using a bulldozer on students. Local media in DC reported on the incident.

The issue is so complicated, with prejudices, mistrust, and blames going on all sides that it's difficult to disseminate the information to the world. Unfortunately, the electioneering going on right now means that the attention of news is focused on November 7th, election day. The topic of the day is on Iraq, the economy, stem-cell research, and the referendum on Bush. If New Jersey's court did anything, it may fire up gay marriage opponents, but most live in states that already banned gay marriage.

I don't think the situation will escalate into more fighting, but I do think stalemate and fatigue will set in (if they have not already) until Congress gets back in session and puts pressure on the Board of Trustees. I don't care if anyone says that a college is not a democracy. Since Gallaudet is the only university where ASL is used, where deaf people are the majority, and where people can find a common language of signs, the students, the faculty, the staff, and the alumni should have a president with whom they can all work without feeling condescended to, ignored, or outright dismissed.
