bike

I rode the bike today, and the length from the house to the BART station felt long. I have three options of getting to the Deaf school. First, I can drive on the freeway, and deal with the morning commute. Second, I can drive to the BART station, ride all the way to Fremont and walk to the school.

The third option was riding the bike to the BART station and then riding to the school after BART. I enjoy this most of all.

It teaches me one thing. I can almost understand religious fanatics now. They can believe in some things so much that they are willing to sacrifice for it. It does not matter how irrational their beliefs may be. As for me, my belief is irrational as well. Why, for example, should I care about the polar bears and fish?

As far as I can tell, I can accept the Texas justification. Human beings will eventually develop technology that will allow us to deal with crises that occur in the future.

You say we'll run out of fossil fuel in 2015? No problem, we'll already be using alternative fuels by then.

You say the ocean will rise and supplant coastal cities in 2100? Don't worry about that, we'll already have technologies to regenerate ice back into Antarctica. The people living on Maldive Islands and Hawaii will probably have to emigrate until we develop them.

You say increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is causing severe weather? We'll deal with that in the coming years, but as far as I know, the weird weathers are part of a cycle.

You say the rate of extinction in rainforests and the decreasing biodiversity of fishes in the sea should be a cause for concern? No problem, our scientific research will be able to clone animals, or animal organs for our consumptions.

I don't know why I care. I could say that this arises from an interest in self-preservation, but arguments for human progress can sometimes be so convincing that I don't believe I have a responsibility for being a part of it.
