reading between the lines
I never noticed it before because I thought it was characteristic of people in general. But people have commented on the journalist's usage of language where Jane Fernandes talked about building the bridge between the FSSA and the administration by sitting down and have a long discussion. Then in the next paragraph, you would expect her to start the conversation or schedule a meeting, but instead "aides to Fernandes summoned a three-man security escort so she could leave the National Press Club via a freight elevator to the loading dock. Minutes later, her car sped past the protesters as she sat in the back seat staring ahead."
Oh, the irony! Now I have a clue. Thank you, Matthew Chayes, the journalist who wrote that. He may have kept himself from giving an opinion on the issue, but he knew how to make us literally read between these lines and see the discrepany between Fernandes' action and words.
It's possible that Fernandes felt unsafe, but the protesters have been non-violent so far. The fact that the Board of Trustees is now touring the Tent City, with some of them seeming to enjoy it, the problem may lie in the fact that BoT may not be able to remove a president-elect, or at least has not wielded that power before. It may be up to Fernandes to have the good judgment to resign, and I fear she does not.
