Mumps:

Now public health officials are trying to understand how this disease, which in rare cases can cause deafness, encephalitis and male sterility, could have regained a foothold in the U.S. after so many years.

I'm surprised i have a vague understanding of what pertussis, diphtheria, and meningitis are. I know which one is gram-negative or gram-positive, which one is obligate or facultative anaerobe, which one is fastidious or hardy.

Still, I don't know enough, because I haven't studied enough.
