gay marriage legislated in CA
Unlike Massachusetts and Vermont, the California State Senate has passed a marriage bill opening equality in marriage to all gays and lesbians of its own volition. Not by court order did this come to pass.
Unfortunately, it looks more stormy in the Assembly. We'll see how this goes, but I won't have a breathless anticipation by depriving myself of air.

Why is this being allowed? 5 years ago the voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 22 that defines marriage as "between a man and a woman". Are these idiots in Sacramento not listening to their constituents? This is obviously an attempt to clandestinely pass this legislation during the aftermath of the greatest natural destruction this country has ever seen, hoping that the people won't notice. This has got to stop!
Ever since the election of Arnold Schwarzenegger, I've learned to take the voters' opinion with a grain of salt.
Voters can change their minds, sometimes within a single day.
I don't understand why you're smearing California's politicians with exploiting Katrina's aftermath. If you're not aware, other people must go on with their lives, even in the midst of a great disaster. Unless you're going there to help, it will not suffice to criticize people, least of all a government that consistently expanded gay rights. It was only a matter of time before they would vote on it, since it has been in the planning stage for months. Unless you're saying that people should suspend their activities just to sit in front of the TV, I think it's only natural that passing a bill would in fact be something to yawn over, least of all, to quibble over.
The best way to act may be the British way. Yes, we are all saddened and overwhelmed with images of sufferings. I don't mean to tell you to go over there to help.
In any case, the passage of the domestic partnership rights bill and the court's ruling that even gay and lesbian parents have legal rights over custody of their adopted children, prove that it was only a matter of time.
I will agree with you, however, that it seems as if the timing is suspect. If they had planned to weeks ago vote today, then there is no reason to delay the voting to get on with other matters.
