Misconducts in science

In McPartland's lab, someone did use a Paint Shop Pro to make a electrophoretic gel look better. They had used too high a voltage, resulting in a smear, so they wanted to go the easier way to remove the smear, by digitization, instead of doing the experiment again for another few hours.

If it is common, then I wonder if I was of a more deceptive and competitive nature, I might be willing to bend the truth, fabricate the result, to advance myself quickly in the lab, and chortle as those less selfish work more honestly for faint praise.
