Regardless of whether Obama wins enough delegates tomorrow, he still has many years left in him. If the country cannot accept the fierce urgency of now, it can accept him when it is ready. At that moment, I believe Obama could hone his rhetoric to a historical eloquence that is a worthy successor to Martin Luther King, Jr., to John F. Kennedy, to Abraham Lincoln, and so many brilliant orators of the past.

For now, he is probably too uneven, and unpracticed in his devices. Perhaps that's the best thing about him for now, lest he comes off too smooth and rousing to be effective. And perhaps his eloquence will only be able to attain what I call Emily Dickinson's "the light of unanointed blaze" when it is taxed at the forge and anvil of the presidency. In other words, Obama can reach the "white heat" of his rhetoric to outlast this century and the next only by being president, where he must deal with the dangers and challenges of the next eight years.

He must manage Iraq without causing further chaos in the middle east. He must start the United States on the path toward decreasing dependence on oil from volatile regions, i.e. the Middle East, Venezuela, and other failed states. He must handle the ailing economy, caused by the mess the Bush presidency has left. He must keep under control the United States' debt to China. He must manage Iran's increasing belligerence that could lead to a war between the Sunnis and the Shiites. He must tackle on the legacy that has existed because of the Industrial Revolution, the greenhouse gas pollution that is a major cause of global warming.

I have no doubt though that Hillary Clinton isn't also capable of taking on these problems, but she has not been able to set the tone for a new century. And the recent slimy tactics with Bill Clinton trying to barge his way in has turned me off of Hillary.

If Hillary Clinton does win the Democratic nomation, I will not vote for her. My vote will be for a Green Party candidate or another independent. That's why I hope Barack Obama will win.
