pre-lingually deaf

I was not diagnosed until age 5, so it would impossible to know if I was 100% pre-lingually deaf. Because I was the first-born child, my mom did not have an idea of what was normal language development of an infant. But, my deafness was hereditary. It came from my grandmother, but skipped a generation before passing to me. I don't know much about my grandmother's early life, but my mom told me that she was initially hard of hearing before turning deaf. Whether that's true, I do not know. She know how to read, write, and speak Chinese (Cantonese dialect).

I would say parents' involvement is crucial. After the news about my deafness, my mom took care to make sure I was as involved in reading as I possibly could.

I post this due to the recent mini-macaca: Origin of the badge; The instigator; The first response; and The Source.
