President of Gallaudet
There is a lot of outrage at the decision of the Board of Trustees in choosing a new president of Gallaudet that the students do not believe represent their best interests.
It's interesting to read Ridor's accounts of how Dr. Jane K. Fernandes has been antagonistic to the student body while acting as Provost.
I just heard stories from a friend at Ohlone College about how Fernandes called the Washington D.C. cops to treat the Deaf students as a if they were rioting, using tear gas and bludgeons. She thought the local university police couldn't do anything. And yet, despite calling the Washington DC cops who knew no ASL, she didn't hire any interpreters, so the Deaf students and the hearing cops were divided by that perennial communication barrier, leading the students to be bludgeoned repeatedly and dispersed without explanations.
The other thing was at a hotel, where a small group of Deaf students were partying too loudly for other tenants to sleep. So the hotel returned the money to the hearing tenants and apologized. Then the Provost proceeded to blame all the students for the action of a small group of rowdy students.
