left-wing anti-science
Anti-science ain't just on the Right:
Really smart, hot-shot student comes in with her carefully worked out plan to graduate in 3 years by mainlining lab courses every term; I try to explain that she shouldn't do that, that we really, truly want her to leave the science building now and then and throw a pot or read a poem. I don't know any scientists who don't think that there's more to being a well-rounded person than knowing chemistry or physics or biology.Beautifully said. Succinctly summarized by the first comment:
Bravo, I say. There needs to be the "well rounded student." Hard science geeks who need to be exposed to poetry. Fine arts majors who need to spend time in the chem lab.And we teach students in a way that they will love both areas. I may not be good at Linear Algebra, for example, but I will never say, "I hate math," implicating the entire field for a single class experience.
Read the comments. There's an interesting story about an English graduate who knows math but is ridiculed by other English graduates and PhDs that know actually little of the field of math and science. As well as another that treats humanities as a load of rubbish with ridiculous words.
It's surprising to know that just 30 years ago, the hippies were anti-science because it was part of the Establishment that they want to throw a hammer at, or something like that.
