congressional acts of bad faith
The states have been able to put Food Warning Labels on the food sold on their own districts, but the House of Representatives is moving to prevent that, requiring any such effort be made through the FDA.
That would be catastrophe for California.
But then again, Congress hasn't been intelligent about changing policies. Rather than fixing port security, for example, it is only so willing to block the Dubai Ports World deal.
Incompetent acts like this should be replaced with greater goodwill to a promising country. Sadly, the majority of Americans apparently feel threatened more by the idea of a Muslim nation owning the ports and by losing jobs to outsourcing than by the fact that these ports were not even sufficiently protected in the first place.
I actually like Dubai. It's a growing country that is an exception to the Middle East. It's a country that I hope will help change the regions. Even the Wired magazine covered it with enthusiasm. I can't imagine that DPW would want to sabotage a lucrative deal that they are prepared to leverage billions of dollars to purchase from UK.
In this case, it seems none of either parties is particularly farsighted in planning. I, too, am very unhappy with Congress. But I also have to blame President Bush for screwing this up by actually threatening a veto.
