As with all national holidays, this day was not intended to be commercialized. It was created by a woman who wanted to honor her deceased mother. She campaigned to bring Mother's Day to everyone on earth (or at least in the United States). Nearly every state adopted it as a state holiday before President Wilson finally adopted it as a national holiday.
