EXPO 2005 in Aichi, Japan

lang_logo_01 Toward a Sustainable Society

The Expo 2005 starts on March 25, 2005 and will continue for 185 days until September 25, 2005. The goal of this expo is to explore the potentials of creating a greener world, an act that will reduce our reliance on oil, which could be in danger of running out in 2050, or more pessimistically, in 2010 (CNN, 2 Oct 2003).

It is for the sake of averting an economic, social, and cultural catastrophe that we must look into ways we can change our lives, and act on them. An economic tragedy is to have the demand for oil outstripping the supply. A social tragedy is a disruption to all forms of communication, because flying a plane, driving a car, and keeping a house warm and water hot are just few of the ways we depend on fossil fuel for our livelihood and maintain social contact. A cultural tragedy is indeed the most catastrophic because running out of gasoline will alter the very American belief in social mobility, freedom, independence, and the American dream of owning a house and a car in the suburb away from the city.

I'm hoping to attend the Expo 2005 sometime during the summer. I will certainly blog on what's happening. It will be an exciting development to peer into the future and observe what's out there, the collaboration of millions of scientists and enthusiasts to form a global green coalition to combat the old triumvirate, vices of human excesses: pollution, waste, and rebellious despondency.

(This post is sticky, it will stay up until 25 March 2005, 12:01 AM.)
