Energy and the Environment
Shall the twain ever meet? Cary has certainly done his research.
I didn't know about the Alaska drilling arising from legislation to stop drilling in ocean. As much as I would prefer that we live with what we don't have, i.e. more oil, it would serve our interests to wean ourselves from foreign oil as much as possible.
He hasn't mentioned the use of nuclear fuel as one of the best alternatives we have, especially with new pebble-bed technologies and the ability to recycle used fuel.
In both cases, unfortunately, it is hard to reverse the legislation to allow off-shore drilling, and to reverse a policy of dumping spent fossil fuels. It may seem easy to suggest reversing direction, but that would require major geopolitical shift.
It may be just the sacrifice we need. Now if only President Bush had someone else in his cabinet that also had these ideas, rather than only the people he trusts and is loyal to.
I wouldn't mind Vice President Cheney offering the environmentalists the ultimatim of Alaska drilling, or off-shore drilling. I also wouldn't mind him going to the Senate chamber and suggesting that nuclear fuel as a way to supplement our increasing needs for energy while still doing the necessary safety check to make sure not to harm the environment more than it needs to.
I addressed the new technologies available in my analysis of President Bush's State of the Union 2005 (I hate the word analysis, it sounds so stuffy, formal, pompous, and professorial.)
