ambiance, ambient
Ooh, I hate that I have to spell both differently. Apparently, ambiance is a word imported from France, while ambient came from Latin "ambiens."
I saw ambiance, and I thought it was a mispelling because I knew how to spell ambient. Although I knew that "ambience" doesn't look right, I had to check whether "ambience" was a valid word.
It doesn't exist. Gah.

Actually, the root word is ambio..means to surround, ask, or aspire to. ambiens would be the present active participle. :-D
