we haven't reached the worst

Both Republicans and Democrats are holding their fire, because they know that winning the Congress could equal losing the White House in 2008. The Democrats still hope to win, but Howard Dean's fifty-state strategy, funneling money into places that obviously will not benefit Democrats, may be a way to help gain some seats the House while maintaining the minority. In this way, the Democrats can still keep the Republican majority while in the position of blaming it for our country's woes.

It is just beautiful. I don't feel any cynicism in gambling the future of the United States by not committing resources to winning Congress by a large margin. In 1994, even though Republicans won both Houses of Congress, they couldn't dislodge Clinton in 1996. Democrats must feel the same way, that winning in 2006 would mean losing 2008.

The nation is at its worse, rising debt, continued deficit, unpopular abroad, mistrusted at home, but it has still far worse to go in the next two years. What a decade.
