Don't blame Kansas too much
Evidently, in 1999 Kansas voters put a more moderate school board in power, which helped removed creationism from the curriculum that the previous school board had approved. However, the conservatives are back in power, distorting politics as usual. Maybe another vote on the school board will once more eject these vilifying school board members who have the gall to introduce intelligent design as a "science."
After all, the general consense of political scientists and social scientists nationwide is that the American voters are moderate, and the political parties and various institutions are polarized.
