President Bush's State of the Union Address 2005

President Bush's State of the Union Address 2005: "For the good of families, children and society, I support a constitutional amendment to protect the institution of marriage."

It's not a new statement, but he's more emphatic now. It was just one sentence, but it was enough for me to notice because of how personally it affects me.

The speech on changing Social Security over to a system similar to what federal workers have, the Thrift Savings system, interests me most. If that's true, then I can't say I'm entirely against it, because it limits the danger of people investing wrongly. What I must disagree with, however, is the two trillion dollars of debt required to institute such a system because we need to continue providing benefits to senior citizens.

His desire to make the economy more competitive worries me, because I think too much competition can be bad for human health. There should be a way to balance competition with community, but he isn't saying that.

The stuff on the environment, I have more to say. In fact, I'm in support of nuclear energy, especially now that it's safer than before with pebble-bed technology and recycling used nuclear fuel.

Yes, nuclear fuel can be recycled, and other countries are doing it rather than dumping it like we tried to in Yucca Mountain, Nevada. In fact, we continue to dump simply because of President Carter's policy than on sound science.

Unfortunately, there seems to be no clear goal for weaning ourselves off oil, except for investing in hydrogen fuel, a proposition that will taken many years to bring to fruition. It is a wait that would be better supplemented with encouraging automobile industries to design more fuel-efficient vehicles.

The listing of his achievements with bringing freedom was strongest. I could feel a twinge of hopefulness when he introduced the parents of a son who died for freedom, the woman who voted in Iraq for the first time, and his wife as managing domestic needs at home.
