unwatched

I haven't watched the debate last night, but from the reactions of the blogosphere, it was wonderful. Both candidates have stared into the negative abyss, the toil of six weeks of hell in Pennsylvania. Clinton clearly came out of it strong and fearless. I wonder if Obama was wilting inside.

The question is, can Obama take any more of this void, where nothing is dead and journalists hound him like a banshees?

Can the voters?

Can he handle the nation's schizophrenia? Is he wondering, quivering at the four or eight years he must endure? But no, he's a politician. He is made for this job, this scrutinous campaign of his interior, boiling all hopes out of him.

But Clinton was on a roll! She seemed to have been great, the best woodpecker in the world, pecking and pecking and pecking, until all that is left is chips from what was a great tree.

I dreamed much about how well she'd peck McCain, the way Bush destroyed him in South Carolina.

Clinton was marvelous. She is capable of "running on fumes," when Obama has run of gas as he did last night. Just blinking repeatedly, his head sagging, his whole posture leaning, his gait and height ready to fall over, or collapse.

If it does turn out the Obama is just flimsy and substanceless, I wouldn't mind Clinton in the White House after all. She would be the sort of hounding demon that cannot be killed, the Terminator that restores itself for another fight, the zombie that could finally exhaust the nation and put out its light.

I believe this because I think John McCain wouldn't have been the GOP machine for Obama, so Clinton is taking over.

My impression was that it was terrible; endless questions focusing on political dung rather than issues. America is doomed, no matter who wins, if our political system can produce nothing better than weeks of "gotcha" and minutes of substance.

I saw the same impression, but I interpreted it differently, that while it was nothing substantive, it was still the purest form of the poison that we've suffered throughout the Clinton and Bush administrations, it was absolute saturation of lowest-brow, common-denominator media entertainment, totally out of touch with our concerns. But, it has made me see Clinton as the Rottweiler we may need as our president before we can finally say goodbye to all that.
