WoW not gaymer friendly
Apparently and fortunately, I was wrong.
World of Warcraft is the popular massively multiplayer online game that allows players to immerse themselves in another world, role playing a character of a tribe or race, joining guilds and alliances, and living a alter ego.
With gusto, PrismaticEcho, an enigmatic new member that suddenly joined GamEx. His first thread was on WoW not being gaymer-friendly. He said that he has started a blitz of campaign to inform everyone about Blizzard's suppression of gay groups that put anything like "GLBT-friendly" to the guild.
In retrospect, for Blizzard to try to keep guilds non-sexual made sense, but Blizzard was upholding a double standard because on any given guilds, it is more than likely that players will be talking about their real life, of girlfriends and families. Since Blizzard does nothing to disallow this discussion, for it to tear down the GLBT group smacks of nothing short of a full-blown discrimination.
Topics made discussing this policy were deleted save for one at the World of Warcraft discussion board. It may vanish as well. More blitz campaigns continue.
Now, it has made its mention on Boing Boing and Slashdot, all of which are admirable accomplishments.
Blizzard may not be able to escape the anti-gay stigma that has been attached simply for want of putting GLBT-friendly as the name of the guild. But we will need your help in getting more attention to this. It's interesting because other games, like City of Heroes, Final Fantasy XI and Everquest, allow you to have gay guilds. In Final Fantasy XI, most gay players tend to congregate on the Fairy Server (using a world pass of some sort) to meet other gay gamers.
As Blizzard's game is a popular pastime, it is important for people who decide to buy and play the game that they should be informed of Blizzard's policy toward the GLBT population. With enough protest, we may put enough pressure to bear on the company to change its policy. It would be the same as choosing not to shop in Wal-Mart, not to buy from Coca-Cola, and not to eat at MacDonald's.
