Gaza Deadline Passes

Gaza Deadline Passes; Settlers Empty Out: "One woman was overheard telling a soldier how her mother was forced to pack her bags and flee Nazi Germany. 'Just remember that you are the evil one who is throwing me out of my house,' the woman said, rebuffing the soldier's offer of help."

I'm teetertottering in indecision about this. It's a process of expressing peaceful goodwill, yet I can't understand why Israel want to evict the settlers. Can't they stay under Palestinian rule?

Then I found, through googling, this: Ariel Sharon created the Golem of the Israeli settlements. He expected them to comply for the future of Israel, but Golem does not obey. Golem unravels.

I have little opinion over the politics of Israel and the Palestinian land, because I don't understand them. I understand that some people opine, especially in the Atlantic magazine, that Arafat destroyed Palestinian state with his bribery and corruption and his unwillingness to accept any compromise because he had wanted all lands to himself, including Israel.

It'll be interesting to see what happens to Israel, but sometimes I wonder whether a government should really be telling people to leave. If Mexico was going to get California back, and the U.S. told everyone already living here to leave, wouldn't we resist? Wouldn't we claim that we have a right to live here, even if this place belongs to Mexico and the U.S. forcefully took the West from them?
